Poinsettia

Photo of poinsettia

Poinsettia, often seen during the Christmas season, is a cane tree (short tree) belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family. The flowers are small and bloom in the centre of the bracts (leaves), but it is the bracts that are the star of the show as they turn bright red in winter. Originally native to Central America, it was introduced to Europe by Poinsett in 1838, and to Japan in the Meiji era (1868-1912). It remains popular today as a reasonably sized potted plant that can be enjoyed at home.
