Ocellated Cuttlefish (Kisslip Cuttlefish)

Photograph of Kaminari squid (Mongouika)

The ocellated cuttlefish is a squid that enters the Seto Inland Sea from May to July to spawn and grow. Its body is 30cm in length, and has a distinctly large appearance. Another distinctive feature is the hickey-like pattern on the surface of its body. Compared to cuttlefish and silky cuttlefish, the amount of ocellated cuttlefish caught in Kagawa is relatively small. The meat is soft and is best enjoyed as sashimi, but you can also enjoy the sweet, tenderness of the meat itself when it is boiled, fried as tempura, or dressed with kinome (tree sprouts).
